Breathing

At home it is not necessary that you do the same as the speech therapist does in his treatment sessions, but you do what he advises you. One more way to help him from home would be to work on breathing with your child. In this way you will help your child to improve their respiratory function, perception, auditory discrimination and oral-facial agility.

Some exercises

To help your child with breathing, it is advisable to do fun exercises that enhance the breath.

  • Blow your face. We can make a game of blowing on the face to keep it cool. Make your child blow first without puffing out the cheeks and then puffing them out. Cover your nose at some of the time to make sure that all the air comes out of your mouth.
  • Blow into the hands. First you will blow on your child’s hands with different intensities, then you will tell him to blow on your hand. Finally, he will blow it into his hand to discover the intensity of his blowing.
  • Inflate balloons. Have different sized balloons on hand to blow up between the two of you. You can do it in different ways, blow one between the two to see who finishes first, inflate a larger one and then a smaller one and time the time, etc.
  • Make soap bubbles. You can make soap bubbles at home or with toys prepared for it. The important thing is that your child blows to make the bubbles and feels the gratification of doing it well by seeing the bubbles fly.
  • Make pinwheels. You will make a pinwheel with your child with paper and a rod as a support, and then blow it and see what happens. When you paint it, you can combine it with colors to make it more attractive when you blow it.
  • Blow paper. Put pieces of paper on the table, taking into account your child’s blowing ability. Play with your child to time to see who throws all the papers to the ground first with their blows.
  • Blow a musical instrument. Be it a trumpet, a flute or any musical instrument that emits sounds when blowing.

Follow the guidelines

The breathing of children with dyslexia is usually shallow, short and difficult to blow. Surely your child has articulatory problems and it may be difficult for him to follow the exercises proposed by the speech therapist, or even the ones recommended that you practice at home with him, but with patience he will improve. In addition to these breathing exercises, follow the guidelines that the professional advises you to do at home.
